England Wheelchair team win World Cup
England Wheelchair Rugby League have been crowned World Champions after defeating hosts Australia 44-12 in the Wheelchair Rugby League World Cup Final today (Monday 17 November) at Mount Druitt, Sydney.
England Captain and Wigan star Martin Norris lifted the World Cup trophy following an excellent man of the match performance in what was a thoroughly professional display from England.
England Wheelchair Rugby League Head Coach, Phil Roberts, said: “It was a fantastic effort from the whole team, not just tonight but over the three weeks.
“We’d like to give a big thanks to everyone that helped us get over here; we’re all so proud and privileged to win the World Cup for England.
“There’s been a big uptake in the sport in Australia while the competition has been on and hopefully our World Cup win will inspire even more people in the UK to get involved in Wheelchair Rugby League.”
England triumphed in the Wheelchair Rugby League World Cup after proceeding through the tournament undefeated, registering two wins over the Pacific Islands, a win over France and two wins over Australia.
Calderdale star Andrew Wharton was the player of the tournament for England.
If you are interested in getting involved in Wheelchair Rugby League in this country the next Wheelchair Rugby League Tag Festival will be held at The Lightwaves Leisure Centre, Wakefield on Saturday 13 December.
There will be coaching and competitions for existing players and teams as well as for emerging teams and interested individuals.
