McNamara excited by full-time England challenge

Tuesday 13th July 10

England Head Coach Steve McNamara today voiced his excitement at being given the opportunity to coach the national team in a full-time capacity following his departure from Bradford Bulls.

McNamara was released from his contract with the Engage Super League club by mutual consent earlier today, a move which allows him to give 100 per cent to England as the sport approaches an important era in its international history.

This autumn sees England head Down Under for the Four Nations, a tournament which returns to Europe next season, while in 2013 the UK will host the Rugby League World Cup.

“There’s a lot of work to do and I’m very excited that I now have the chance to channel all my energies into England,” said McNamara. “We have made solid progress over the last 12 months and will be looking to kick on as we prepare for the Four Nations.

“The RFL wanted me to do the England job full time when I was appointed back in April but the Bulls felt it was in their best interests if I stayed and I was more than happy to do so.

“I’m a little bit sad to be leaving Bradford because the club has been such a big part of my life.

“I have some great memories from my time at the Bulls, both as a player and as a coach. A lot of good work has taken place over the last four years and I firmly believe that strong foundations are in place for the next coach to take the club forward.”

McNamara will take up his full-time contract as England Head Coach with immediate effect and RFL Chief Executive Nigel Wood said he was looking forward to him making a significant impact.

“The RFL made it clear from the outset that our preference was to have Steve on board in a full-time capacity as long as it did not disrupt his club so we are delighted that the Bulls have now agreed to release him,” said Wood.

“The progress England made during last year’s Four Nations continued under Steve during the Gillette Fusion International against France and his presence as a full time coach can only be beneficial as we look to the 2013 World Cup and beyond.”
